Description

DigiStix 2 is an AUv3 compatible drum machine and sampler plugin for your favourite DAW.

This new version of DigiStix brings some distinct advantages over its predecessor, most notably the ability to host up to 64 samples per drumkit with 5 layers per pad. The interface has been drastically redesigned for iPad to make better use of full screen mode, allowing a popular MPC style 4x4 pad layout with 4 banks of samples. Digistix 2 also allows greater control over the multi-sample layers, with the ability to individually control the volume levels and pitch of layers as well as global pitch and tune settings all from the new sample window.

Previously, each pad had effect sends for the internal reverb and delay effects, but this can now be routed to external busses 9 and 10 for processing using external effects.

The controller editing is now build into the main display and can be edited in place without the need to scroll the interface. It also now supports extra effect controllers. A new context aware control window allows you to quickly change pad settings without the need for popup windows.

DigiStix 2 now supports GM and original DS drum kit layouts, and includes a sophisticated multi-layer Auto Sampler, capable of recording new GM compatible drumkits automatically from your hardware. It is 100% backward compatible with the original app, and can be used as a drop-in replacement.

Drag and drop support now allows you to directly drop samples on specific layers, as well as preview and edit them directly. You can create new kits by simply combining banks from existing kits into one mega kit, or use our non destructive referencing to include sounds from other kits.

The randomize feature has been enhanced so you can randomize individual instruments or within specific banks. The new continuous MIDI learn mode makes custom mapping a breeze.

Patterns can also be exported as MIDI stems for use in other packages including a direct import to Helium clips. You can also export patterns as audio in the latest version.

The auto sample feature allows automated recording of GM compatible kits directly from hardware drum machines. The slice editor can also be used for MPC style slicing of audio clips.

Has everything and more

Love all the new additions here. The sample delay works perfect, not only for lining up layers just right but also for changing up the groove by making certain elements like hats or kicks just a little bit late/early in relation to each other. Thank you so much for adding that and hope others find it useful as well! I highly recommend all this dev’s apps, you won’t be disappointed. Thanks!

Promising, needs some dialing in

There are some promising qualities here. I would highly recommend merging the round robin and velocity laters, so the user can have 3 or 4 round robin samples for each layer. This is key to getting realistic drums. So each drum would have about 15 or 20 samples. My other observation is the sample editor screen is squashed so arbitrarily small, the user can’t even get enough of a vertical visual on the waveform to see where low velocity samples start when editing. That’s a confusing choice to me. Why not make the sample edit screen full screen with a close button? I created a custom kit with velocity layers, but It took forever and was extremely tedious in the gui because the start of the waveforms for the soft samples were so hard to see. The ‘scrolling interface’ and small sampler editor also becomes cumbersome, quickly. I’d make each gui page full screen with buttons to quickly tab to each. Lots of great stuff here, nonetheless. Please, though, most importantly, add 3-4 round robin samples for each velocity layer and then you’ve really got something here. Some updates and Digistix could be the cat’s meow!

What a disappointment

This app is amazing in so many ways. Excellent assortment of drum kits to get started with, amazingly easy to modify or create your own drum kits including from scratch using your own samples. The control over every aspect of the samples can be tweaked to a mind-boggling degree. Integration with external midi devices is superb. Beautiful user interface.

But this isn’t for drummers. Many common time signatures - 12/8, 7/8, 9/8 are just ignored. You can’t enter individual triplet notes. You can only enter a sequence of three notes within a specified time unit. You can work around this to achieve a swing feel by entering 8th notes and specifying a 100% swing value, but if you’re trying to enter broken triplets, e.g. on a combination of only the “&” or the “uh” of the triplet, you’re out of luck.

For this app to include so much beautifully executed functionality and fall down on such a basic drum machine capability is a shame. It should accommodate *any* time signature, and all triplet variations (e.g. the not uncommon jazz practice of quarter-note triplets spanning the interval of a half-note). This is an astonishing oversight.

I bought this to replace a more rhythmically robust app in which it was more laborious to create new drum kits and doesn’t implement the AUV3 interface. Sadly DigiStix finds its own way to miss the mark. Here’s hoping a future update addresses this issue.
