Terbano ,

Strongest iOS app for composition

Scaler is a terrific app. I’m already educated in music theory, but I use it mostly as an arrangement tool, and to quickly fine tune voicings in my compositions. David and the dev team at Scaler also pay a lot of attention to their user’s feedback, warts and all, and even have dialogues on the points worth discussing. For that reason, I’m quite confident this tool will continue to evolve and become more useful.

I’ve been on the desktop version for a good spell, and it’s found a deeper spot in my professional workflow as updates have been released. That’s always a very good sign. I recently added the iOS version, and can say after a few weeks of putting it through the paces that it’s the equal of the desktop version. It’s been very stable, as well, which is gold in a professional environment. I’m looking forward to seeing what they cook up next for version 3.

Recommended. Well worth it.

Thanks Terbano, appreciate the feedback and yes we will support both platforms as we always have and lots on the way!

This app is unbelievable!

Edit: I originally thought that you couldn’t export the .midi file because when you try to do it the “caveman way” like I did, which was to save and export whatever I had saved, you would just get an xml file, however, thanks to the response from the dev team, the feature is there and a lot easier than I thought.

Edit: Thanks for the response… I tried exactly what you wrote and it works perfectly… I checked the forums etc. and I haven’t seen this particular solution. It was a bit difficult to find in the manual, but nonetheless, thank you. This now does everything I need and hoped that it would do! Awesome product! Changing to 5* now

Developer Response ,

Hi Guitarjoshb. Thanks for the feedback. Have you tried saving chord sets or using the midi capture as methods of exporting MIDI? There are several ways to export midi to your computer. May we suggest you check the manual and also join the scaler community where some of the devs and other users may be able to help. Hope that helps.

Needs work

OK, so it works as advertised, but the interface and app flow are klunky and the content is really bloated. I would like two things to change, one is to make patterns and chords into separate purchases because there is just to much bloat. I really don’t like having to search through menu lists for patterns and styles, and even if I find a performance or pattern that I somewhat like it cannot be edited. The screen real estate is handled badly and too much diving through menus or changing pages to develop a smooth workflow. If you like the style of having the app do your creative work it’s great, but as a creator I don’t see it being very helpful to develop my own ideas. I will keep this in hopes that it will improve but for now it’s just too cluttered to be useful to me. Best to all who like it, and may it serve you well. PS don’t recommend training courses. I have around a hundred music apps on my iPad and none of them are as obtuse as Scaler.

Developer Response ,

Thanks for the feedback Harrison. We've always felt there is room for improvement, we are working on an overhaul and very excited about what the future may bring. If you get some time we'd love you to be patient with Scaler 2 in its current form, it's used by many of the worlds top producers and composers and we are fortunate to count over 300,000 registered users across iOS and MacOS whom get along well with, and cherish Scaler 2.
